Welcome to our new website – over 2,500 users in July 2022 (since launch in November 2021).

Background

The Wherwell History Group was formed in 2008, see more detail in Our Story.

Our main objective is to research, record and preserve the history of the parishes of Wherwell and Chilbolton, and maintain an archive of sound recordings and written or photographic material. We are also keen to stimulate interest in the local history of Wherwell, Chilbolton and the surrounding villages, and maintain a healthy membership base.

We were an active participant in the Living Links Community Project (2008 to 2011) which was established to encourage local groups to preserve the past and the present for the future. This project was managed by the Hampshire Record Office.

For several years, the History Group has published a Village Photo Calendar (2012 – 2021) using a variety of themes; ‘Bygone’ photographs, ‘Then & Now’ photographs and village scenes. Other publications include a Wherwell Walk booklet and a commemorative brochure to celebrate the 60-year anniversary (July 2012) of the release of the film “Sound Barrier”. Throughout 2010 we compiled a Wherwell Scrapbook, a record in words and pictures, of the many and various events, anniversaries and activities which took place in the Parish of Wherwell in a 13-month period commencing 1st December 2009. We helped celebrate the completion of Phase 1 of the restoration of Wherwell Church by preserving a Village Time Capsule.

Wherwell History Group is a member of the Community Archives and Heritage Group.
