20th Century Stores, Wherwell c.1900.

20th Century Stores and Beerhouse, c.1900.
The gentleman in the front with his arms folded is believed to be Mr Henry Olliff the owner of the store. He seems more interested in the photographer than the very latest in motor cars that is making its way slowly along the High Street. Olliff’s stores sold literally everything. Inside you could buy groceries, bread from the bakery, clothes, boots and shoes, and hire horses and carriages. It was also the local Post Office. The fine tree at the approach to Church Street is sadly no more although a replacement was planted.
