Chilbolton Village Store and High Street, c.1965
Chilbolton Village Shop formerly known as The Bruce Hunt Store.
In the first picture, taken in 1965, the sign of the New Inn pokes up over the hedge, beckoning with refreshment and food. The Village Shop and Post Office serve the village six days a week.
Mothers and children make their way to Chilbolton’s village store and post office. Power lines are visible in the picture, but electricity came to Chilbolton much later than many other communities. Apparently, the villagers are said to have been fearful of it, so they were bribed with free lights and fittings.
The second picture , also taken in 1965 shows the shop staff.
