Living Whist
Living Whist.
This game was played by the members of Chilbolton and Wherwell W.I. It was played at Broxton Court, Chilbolton in the thirties and previously at Down End.
“On Wednesday, 29 July, 1936, two further performances of living whist were presented at Broxton Court, by this time the home of Miss Ley. Wherwell WI and friends were asked to make up the required number of 56 persons required to play living whist.
Jim and Edith Vincent explained that 56 or 58 players were required for the game — 52 to form the pack of cards and four players. But you can play with a couple of jokers to bring the total number required to 58.
The “cards” are shuffled just like a normal game and then dealt and the four players carry on playing a normal game of whist but calling out the “cards” who form themselves into the various tricks. I am told it is extremely interesting to watch and quite colourful as well.
Now for those in the 1927 picture: Jim and Edith cannot place some of those taking part, but the back row (left to right) includes: Mrs Sandom, Mrs Gertrude Trodd (3rd left), Mrs Millard. Mrs Prangley, Mrs Holder, Miss Merrifield and Mrs Rose.
Among those in the third row are Mrs Vera Trodd (3rd row, 2nd left) Mrs Cook, Mrs Edwards, Miss N. Miller, Miss Bull, Mrs Holloway and another Miss Merrifield.
In the second row are Miss L. Prince, Miss V. Trodd, Miss E. Slllence, Miss E. Miller, followed by Miss Eastman, Miss C. Hart, Miss D. Duckett, Mrs Martin (in the middle as a joker), Miss D. Vincent, Miss Q. Eastman, Miss M. Rose, Mrs A. Vincent and then Miss Wise, E. Hopley, P. Mayand Miss M. Holloway.
Those in the front row Include Jack White, Frank Foster (with jockey cap), S. Stackley, N. Dunford, Miss M. White (three of diamonds), Miss E. Rodden, Miss Eastman (three of hearts). Miss A. Millard (two of diamonds), Sam Robinson, Miss C. Prangley, Doug Payne, Jim Vincent but the boy on the end has not been named.
So apart from half a dozen “cards” all the persons taking part have been identified “
