Saxon Queens.
The early history of Wherwell is shrouded in myths and legends but certainly an Abbey was founded in Wherwell by Elfrida the widow of King Edgar. There are no remains of the Abbey but the site was undoubtedly in the grounds of the present Priory.
This account by George Brickell gives a history of Queen Elfrida and other Saxon Queens who resided here.
