Print of High Street, Wherwell, 1955.
Print of 18-20 High Street, Wherwell, by William Dreghorn – a former geography master who was very quick at painting studies like this. Greg Gregory, from AHAS, writes “William Dreghorn taught at Andover Grammar School from 1949 to 1959. This eccentric character was an artist, author, geologist, historian and had interests in much else besides. In Japan before the war, he joined the RAF for the duration and then came to Andover from Gravesend Grammar School. A strict disciplinarian, he seems to have had a dry, individual sense of
humour and said that he only decided on Andover because the school had a decent swimming pool, a facility of which he made use every single day. He was evidently a brilliant teacher and those he taught remember him with affection, respect and some
amusement. He eventually departed to St Paul’s College, Cheltenham and in retirement he moved to Cyprus and produced topographical guide books and pictures for the local tourist board. A popular figure there, he is honoured by having one of the halls in Kyrenia Castle, Cyprus dedicated to him.”
