Marjorie Countess of Brecknock
Marjorie Countess of Brecknock
WHERWELL was yesterday mourning the Countess of Brecknock who died, aged 89, at The Priory, in the Centre of the village, her life-long home. Her death, after several months of illness from cancer, came only weeks after she had played host at a glittering social evening to the Duke of Edinburgh, as president of the Macmillan Appeal for a hospice in Andover which, fittingly, will bear her name.
Few could have been aware then that only her indomitable spirit, so evident during a long and varied life, enabled her to take part so fully. The part she played in village activities was vast, threading through the church, the parish and local organisations.
She was a forthright character, always making her views known but at the same time demonstrating a quiet but sharp sense of humour. It was evident The Priory was especially dear to her and it was fortunate a recent purchase of the house allowed her to remain in occupation.
There she shared her life, with interests in gardening, fishing and music, as well as being an extremely good shot, with her beloved Labrador, Kipper. It was from a room in The Priory that the increasingly successful Macmillan appeals, firstly for Macmillan nurses to care for the dying in their own homes and secondly for the £1¼ million hospice, were master-minded.
She was the only child of Col. Teddy Jenkins and his wife, Anna, a niece of Sir Ernest Cassel, the German born financier who was grandfather to Edwina, Countess of Burma. The two were close friends and Lady Brecknock succeeded Lady Mountbatten as Supt-in-Chief of the St John Ambulance Brigade .
Her marriage to the Earl of Brecknock was dissolved in 1941. Their son the Marquess of Camden lives at Cowdown Farm, Andover, and has two children. Their daughter lives in Cornwall.
