Boost for Village Store
HUSBAND and wife proprietors of the popular village shop in Chilbolton have boosted their weekly takings by sharing the cost of a £6,000 modernisation project with Hampshire County Council.
The authority is joining in the fight to win back trade for village shops by offering grants to businesses to improve facilities and expand stock to meet the needs of modern- day customers.
Stephen and Carol Aspery joined in the scheme in order to share the cost of fitting new and bigger chillers in their store.
The extra space and wider range of goods now on offer has paid off handsomely with takings boosted by £500 weekly and rising.
The couple took over the stores two years ago after a move from Somerset. It is very much a family business with daughters Rebecca, aged 13, and Charlotte, aged 15, helping out when school work permits.
Stephen and Carol keep a close eye on how they can expand. Apart from the staples of groceries, newspapers and magazines, fruit and vegetables they have introduced dry cleaning, shoe repairs and potted plants.
