(from the Parish Registers)
Obituary for Mr Powell
Sunday last as Mr. ANNESLEY POWELL was returning from a visit to Mr. Hawker, at Longparish, and had nearly reached his own door, at Wherwell, his horse made an attempt to turn towards the stable, when he had unfortunately got his foot out of the stirrup : the unhappy consequence was, that he lost his seat, and the horse ran away, and threw him with his head directly on a large flint stone, which occasioned such a concussion of the brain that he never spoke afterwards , and expired about half-past nine on Monday morning. A Coroner’s Inquest was yesterday assembled, and gave the Verdict of “Accidental Death.”
Never was there a man more universally regretted, from a general circle of acquaintance, to the lower classes of society!
His unbounded private charities were perfectly in unison with his well-known hospitality.
He is succeeded in his estates by his younger brother John Roberts Esq.
