Dame Anne Warburton DCVO; CMG (born 1927, London, died 2015)
First Woman to become a British Ambassador Dame Anne was a British diplomat and she made history as the first female British Ambassador. This role had existed for over 650 years before she was installed at the age of 49. The ban on female diplomats getting married was only lifted three years before Anne accepted her ground-breaking post. Dame Anne was a prime mover in the global campaign for women’s rights all her life. Dame Anne was the sister of the Rev. Piers Warburton of Chilbolton.
