Photo and Parish Magazine article about Chris Appleby by Tessa Youell
Chris has lived in Chilbolton ever since he arrived aged 11 at Easter 1946, chauffeur-driven in a lorry. His father, chauffeur then head-gardener to the Forbes family, moved here when Mr Forbes retired to Chilbolton Cottage, ‘for the fishing’. Among the other children he got to know, were Bruce and Eleanor Hunt (Lockyer), whose father, also Bruce, owned Chilbolton Stores and the garage next door (where Gandolfo is now), Ann Vincent in Room Cottages, Alan Roberts, and his companion and fellow choirboy, David Bryant.
Chris went to Wherwell School for a term. After that, having already passed the 11+, he went to Andover Grammar. He left school at sixteen just before Christmas 1949, and the day after Boxing Day took a job at Watson and Haig. He worked there as an agricultural engineer, becoming head of their workshop near Alton, until he retired in 1990.
