Breed notes for the Wherwell chicken, written by John Graham of Branksome Close, Chilbolton. John was an accomplished breeder and exhibitor of the Large Buff-laced Wyandotte.
The Wherwell breed was created by Jim Smith, the poultry man for Mrs Jenkins at Wherwell Priory, from a cross between Light Sussex hens & Indian Game
males.
The Wherwell chicken was a heavy breed (male 10 lb, hen 8lb) described in the British Poultry Standards (1960) as “Egg colour tinted. Single comb. Face red, beak white or horn striped with white, eyes yellow to red. Body broad across the shoulders with prominent
butts. A compact outline showing good depth of body with rounded sides and wings. Gold and silver varieties.
