“Scramble” by Leslie Gordon Batt
Corporal Thomas England is an aircraft technician and instructor with 238 Squadron (RAF), based at RAF Cosford in Shropshire. Tom is researching into 238 Squadron’s past, with the intention of producing a short written history which can be issued to newcomers to the unit. Part of his research covers Chilbolton during WW2.
Leslie Gordon Batt was a Sergeant (238 Squadron) and a Battle of Britain pilot, who has written a book “Scramble! A Flying Memoir of One of ‘The Few’”, one of many books published by the Battle of Britain Historical Society. This memoir contains a description of being billeted in Lawn Bank, Station Road, Chilbolton.
There are two extracts from his book about their move from RAF Middle Wallop to Chilbolton Airfield and life at their billet with the Payne family at Lawn Bank.
Also pictured are Lawn Bank at the time they were billeted and the same house in 2013.
