Church Street Wherwell
South of England Advertiser
Where Old England is England Still.
From Mr G G Garland, of Petworth, comes this happy scene of rural peace and beauty. It is a scene at Wherwell, near Andover, in Hampshire – the natives pronounce it “Horrell” or something like that! Many folk who know Hampshire well think it is the prettiest village in the county – though more would probably vote for Twyford or Selborne. As the picture shows, Wherwell exhibits the thatcher’s old craft. Those roofs – how charmingly do they contrast with the gaudy coverings of our modern bungalows! Think of that lurid red or that slaty grey and then of the thatch that harmonises with the country around.
