After a beautiful and bountiful autumn, winter is still not sure, weather-wise, that it wants to be with us just yet. However all the winter and Christmas goodies packed into the next two months are boldly on display in this month’s magazine. With the end of the work on the church roof, The Wherwell Singers will be back in St Peter & Holy Cross on 10th December with their Christmas Concert. We would like to take this opportunity to wish our curate, Stuart Rason every success on his new appointment as Chaplain in the Royal Navy. On a very sad note we would like to remember Bee Green and James Hellier who’ve recently died. They will be fondly remembered by people from both villages and way beyond.

This month I find myself looking at the Christmas contributions and thinking this year has gone so quickly. Over the next two months there are fetes, concerts, talks, cleaning and all manner of activities to get involved in. The weather may well be much colder by the time you read this so time to make sure your car is ready for the winter weather. The falling leaves can be very slippery and the first early morning frost can always catch out the unprepared motorist. Please do make sure your windows are clear before you pull away. The village magazine has an opportunity for a younger member of our community to join our team. This would be eligible for the volunteering section of the award. Just a reminder there is no magazine produced in January, so please do get your diary dates for January in by the 10th November for inclusion in the December magazine.

As if sensing the threat of addiction to Downton or Strictly, village organisers have chosen this month to unleash a fearsome array of stimulating events up and down the valley. Interesting that here at the top end of the valley we are invited to talks about The Restoration of Charles II and Monet’s Home and Garden at Giverny, whilst down river in Longstock, it’s all about mushrooms and further down still, in Kings Somborne, there’s the promise of some blasts from the folk music past at their new village hall music sessions starting in November. Meanwhile, the overlap of the seasons is emphasised by reports of junior cricket appearing in the same month as advance notice of Christmas Fayres. Let’s just hope we don’t blink and miss the Autumn!

August may have been a quiet month full of both sunshine and showers. We all hope you have all had good holidays. September is very promising as its full of options of events and activities for you to undertake. From Knitting, to keep fit, fundraising and theatricals believe me it‟s all there this month. As the summer comes to a close, children return to school, and the harvest is gathered its time to think about preparing for winter. According to
the weathermen we are in for a spectacular spread of autumnal colours so we hope you can all enjoy the coming season.

August is traditionally a quiet month, as people take off on their holidays. Not in Chilbolton and Wherwell, it would seem! As this month’s magazine proves, this is a community that has a wide range of activities and events on offer over the next few weeks. So while we wait for summer to begin, why not prepare your garden produce and even get baking for the Chilbolton Flower show on the 27th, or start training your dog to catch sausages for the fun day at the Wherwell Sports and Dog show on the 29th, to mention just a couple of possibilities. And let’s hope for some sun!

Long summer evenings, barbecues, fetes and holidays, summer is upon us. What better way to enjoy it than with another great month of contributions to your village magazine. We have a good selection of events to attend as well as our regular contributions. If you want to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard we would like to hear from you. Tell us about your events, your experience of village events you attended, and your local stories.

Fete fever grips the valley this month and, judging by the relative lack of other activity, everyone must be focussing on this. Time then to dig out those unwanted Christmas presents and deliver them to the front door of your bric-a-brac stall holder. But hang on a minute, there is one major event going on next month. For anyone who enjoys choral music – and you can‟t get much more popular than Vivaldi‟s Gloria – the Wherwell Singers summer concert on Saturday 18th June is a must attend event. This year, due to the renovation of St Peter & Holy Cross, the concert is in Stockbridge at St Peters Church in the High Street. This is a bigger venue than Wherwell so please make every effort to support the boys and girls on their first foray down river. It‟s just not the same watching it afterwards on You Tube and Stokes Wine Bar have very kindly offered to do the pre-concert and interval drinks. You can‟t get more civilised than that. All the best.

As I write this the sun is shining, it is a beautiful Easter weekend. From the sounds around me many of my neighbours are busy in their gardens. It really is like summer has arrived with the odours from barbecues and some time to enjoy the weather. It won‟t be long now till the village fetes take place, a highlight to our communities. A phenomenal amount of voluntary preparation, planning and work goes into making these events the success that they are. We also have the Auction of promises on 20th May. Do come along and make a bid, there looks to be a great selection of items to bid on.

The daffodils are out, the birds are singing and we can see them flying over carrying bits in their beaks for nest building and, best of all, the temperature has risen this week to an amazing 17 degrees Celsius – it really is beginning to feel as if summer is on its way – long may it last. At the end of April we have the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton to look forward to. Sadly if you haven‟t received your invitation yet, it looks as if you‟ve been passed over. One positive way of viewing this run of bank holidays is for those of you in full time work, you can take an 11 day holiday and you only need to take 3 days out of your annual holiday entitlement – not bad at all!

There are plenty of chances to exercise both mind and body this month. You can join the annual fun run, provide volunteer labour on West Down, attend a Bridge evening or form a team at one of two quiz nights…… that‟s if you feel safe leaving your house having studied the police crime map of the area! What‟s for sure is that if David Cameron wants a model for the Big Society he could do a lot worse than pop down here to check out the combined community efforts of our villages, especially now he‟s kindly decided not to sell off the forest!

Our snow covering has gone for now and the new grit bins were very useful to keep our villages moving in the bad weather. It‟s no wonder many of us look to find some winter sunshine to beat the winter blues. January looks like ending in a dull haze but with the promise of spring to come and what a lot we have going on. Have a look at the diary pages we have quizzes, talks, walks, coffee mornings, keep fit, balls, films and pantos as well as all of our regular village activities. From bees to mobile phones and broadband we have something for everyone this month. Welcome to 2011 and may it be your best year ever.
The magazine for January is published with the preceding December, as a double issue.
