Gloomy with occasional sunny intervals probably sums up the weather for 2012 and also the state of our economy! Hopefully, your Community Magazine has been a little ray of sunshine landing on your doorstep every month. Both villages appear to be thriving. We are grateful to all the advertisers and people who have contributed to this publication. You have given us interesting articles to read and kept us informed about the four pillars of any village – church, school, pub and shop, alongside the sterling efforts of our Parish Councils. You have tempted villagers with events galore – the specials, such as the Wherwell Abbey Pageant, Proms 2012, Wherwell Singers and Chilbolton Players, along with the kaleidoscope of talks, quizzes, food evenings, skittles, film shows and live music. So, let’s move past the shortest day, treat ourselves to some ‘quality time’ and then listen out for our church bells ringing in a bright New Year. We would like to wish all readers a very Happy Christmas.

As the late autumn mists swirl on the Common, our thoughts turn to lighting the home fires and hunkering down. There is still plenty to be doing before winter is upon us, however – coffee mornings, quiz evenings, interesting talks, bike rides, a fish and chip supper and an Eastern Feast, a screening of War Horse, early Christmas fairs and a Dickens evening with the Chilbolton Players – to name but a few. It’s all here in the magazine, along with your favourite features and adverts from local businesses. We have such a full
magazine this month, in fact, that we have reluctantly had to hold a few articles back for another day. Don’t forget that the December edition of the magazine includes January as well, so get your diary dates and copy in for both months by 10th November at the latest. And do get out and about while the weather permits!

Hello again, as I write this I am reminded it is only 14 weeks to Christmas yet warm summer days are almost a distant memory. No I am not wishing the time away but looking forward to a month of Quizzes in both villages, dates for the Christmas Fayres and numerous opportunities to get involved. So why don’t you contact one of the great local groups we have in our villages and get out and meet new people this autumn. Enjoy the changing colours of the trees its’ supposed to be spectacular this year.

Welcome to the September edition. The highlight of last month has to be London 2012 – even I got caught up in ‘Olympic Mania’. With 29 gold medals and 65 medals in total, Team GB deserve a hearty ‘Well Done’; lets hope their legacy survives more than a couple of months. September is Back-to-School time and our rich and varied village groups all have lots on offer, including the third Wherwell Proms on 8th September. So, find yourself a comfy armchair or sunny spot in the garden, make yourself a cuppa, have your diary and pencil to hand and have a slow, quiet read of your Village Magazine. Enjoy !

The summer may just finally be deciding to get out of bed and make an appearance, having rained on just about everyone’s parade so far. So all looks set fair for the usual lively programme of community events in the two villages, including the Sid Rowles Memorial Cricket Day at the Wherwell Playing Fields on 5th August, the Flower Show on 25th August and the Wherwell Playing Fields Sports Fete and Dog Show on 27th August. If it should rain, you can always take refuge at the Wherwell Home Guard Club Quiz Evening on 18th August. If you are on your hols, hope the weather remains kind. And for those wondering how to fill the autumn evenings, practice your singing in the shower and then come and join the Wherwell Singers – no better way to keep sane in mind and body!

One of the pleasures of living in our villages is the tranquility and the sense of being a little away from the frenetic mainstream of 21st century life. However, two articles in this issue provide a fascinating view of a period life must have been considerably less peaceful: the story behind the film, ‘Sound Barrier’ reveals the pivotal role played by the aerodrome during the War and in the development of supersonic flight immediately afterwards (see also diary dates). And the second part of Helen Jones’ portrayal of life here in the forties and early fifties, reminds us of the extent to which the presence of military activity once pervaded our two villages.

Where can you find an amateur dramatic group, history society, singers, walkers, badminton players, book clubs, social networks and more? Welcome to June – and what a month it will be – we have 2 village fetes, lots of summer walking, picnics, fundraising and fun for all the family. Let’s all hope the weather is good to all of the planned events and no more of the early morning frosts we have seen well into May. If you are new to the village or been here a while summer is a great time to meet new people and get involved in the abundance of good social networks which span our corner of Hampshire.

We’re still in the depths of spring (ne’er cast a clout ‘till May is out) but the community is busy planning for the Wherwell and Chilbolton fetes in June – get baking and collecting for the stalls! In the meantime, there is plenty on offer to tide you over until June, with the Wherwell Pageant on 12th May, a sing-along tea party on 16th May and the Wherwell Primary School fete on 20th May. And do support Vocalium, a new chamber choir directed by our own Dale Webb, at Wherwell Church on 19th May in aid of the church roof. Finish off the month with a barn dance at Wherwell Village Hall on 26th May or take in some jazz by the river at the White Bridge in Stockbridge on 27th May. Lots to do!

Lots of interesting events coming up in the villages in April, including the Wherwell Singers Spring Concerts. The first concert is actually down in Compton on the 21st, with the same concert being sung again the following week in Stockbridge. The Singers hail from all the villages in the benefice so please try and get to one of their events. Plenty of progress too this month on a number of Parish Council issues in both Chilbolton and Wherwell that have been bubbling away for months, proving that the work of our local representatives really does reap benefits. Well done to them all and a Happy Easter from the Magazine Team!

Welcome to another jam packed edition. Alongside all your favourite regular features, we have Wafering Irons (for Mothering Sunday), Daffodil walk and many more events for the Spring season extending further into April. Jubilee preparations are well under way, plus we have a Jumble Sale, Wine Tasting, Florence Nightingale and Lord Palmerston; not forgetting that all important fund-raiser – the Auction of Promises. It’s that time of year when everything seems flat, with spring and the next holiday light years away. Resolutions, if kept, add to the dullness. If not, well there’s always Lent coming up. . . However, the joy of living in a village, or rather two villages, is there’s always something going on. A quick look at Diary dates will reveal we’re again spoilt for choice–starting with Moviola’s brilliant film, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The Panto, Treasure Island, is another highlight. Quite different, West Down has become a sort of mini New Forest with two delightful moorland ponies happily pottering about.
The magazine for January is published with the preceding December, as a double issue.
