The Chilbolton Men’s Club began in September 1891, The Durnford Family donated a plot of land in Village Street and a Reading Room and Club for men and boys was established. Philip Langley from Andover has kindly donated to Wherwell History Group a Minutes Book for Chilbolton Mens Club from 1925 to 1952. In the early years, the Club was meeting at the (Old) Village Hall and moved to the Old School in 1933, as detailed below in the Minutes of that year …
A General Meeting was held in the Village Hall on 12th April for the purpose of raising funds for the Billiards Table. The Sec. impressed upon the members that they should be the first to start this going, but at the same time it was generally agreed that it was a waste of money to buy a new table to be spoilt by moving it about the Hall. It was then proposed and passed that we should try and get a room for a full sized table and the possibility of getting the school for this purpose was discussed, at this the President said he thought there was a chance of getting the school and that he would do all in his power to get it. At this the ten members present promised to give £1 each if this scheme was carried out. This ended the meeting.
A subsequent Committee Meeting on 31st July approved a set of Rules and agreed to open the Club on the first Monday in September and that the Club should be open at 6pm and close at 9.30pm each evening.
The Club started the 1933-34 Season with an account balance of £4.8s.3½d. and with the following list of members:
