Tom Baverstock was the village blacksmith and he forged the horseshoe hanging over the door. Horseshoe Cottage, Village Street Originally built as two 17th century cottages, Horseshoe Cottage is a Grade II listed red brick cottage with a thatched roof. Horticultural Society The embroidered scarecrow represents the Horticultural Society. The group meets once a month in the Village Hall. Hot Air Balloon Terry Gilmour has been a hot air balloon enthusiast for over twenty years. He and a group of like-minded friends pursued their hobby at weekends in a balloon sponsored by a business company. Iris The wild iris, a tall plant with long pointed leaves and large flowers, grows on the Common. Jaunty the Bulldog This embroidered square is a portrait of Jaunty, an English bulldog. Honor and her family shared a common interest in bulldogs, owning and breeding them for many years. Kingfisher A moderately common inhabitant of the area, the kingfisher prefers to build its nest by the sluggish waters of river ... Kitcombe, Station Road Cynthia's colonial style bungalow was built in 1902, reputedly as a weekend retreat for the Vicar of Wherwell. At that time Kitcombe's estate was extensive, owning land on both sides of Station Road. The property was known as Test View until 1935. Ladybird This small red beetle with black spots is a welcome visitor to the garden as it feeds on aphids. Lamb One of the joys of springtime is seeing young lambs gambolling in the fields. Flocks of sheep can be seen in the fields at the top of Drove Road and on the Winchester Road near Wherwell. Left-hand Panel The left-hand embroidery panel, one of a set of three, hanging in the main function room at Chilbolton Village Hall, Eastman’s Field, Chilbolton. Lochearn, Paddock Field Paddock Field was part of the Chilbolton Cottage estate. The land was sold in the 1980's, originally for the development of six houses. Alice Turnbull's house was built in the early 1990's. Lotte The Pope family's springer spaniel, Lotte. Lottery The funding for the Chilbolton Heritage Wall Hanging came from "Arts for Everyone," an organisation which apportions grants tocommunity arts projects. The grants are financed by money generated from the National Lottery. Magpies First known as a pie and later as a Maggie pie, the magpie is a woodland species and is a member of the crow family with black-and white plumage (hence "pie"). Marbled White Butterfly The largely nocturnal marbled white butterfly is endemic on Chilbolton Common and inhabits rough, flowery grassland. Once hatched the larva hibernates and doesn't feed until spring. Marsh Marigold Native to marshes and wet places, the marsh marigold grows in the damp soil of the Common. Melbury House, Station Road In 1906, a schoolmaster from Southampton bought four plots of land on Station Road for B#47.00. On two of the plots (originally an orchard) he built Melbury House, an Edwardian double fronted house with sash windows. The adjoining two plots of land were sold in 1928 for B#17 and 10 shillings. Milestone The milestone is situated on the A30 showing the number of miles to London on the old coaching road. Mistletoe and Apples An evergreen shrub with waxy white berries, mistletoe grows in profusion on the trees along the Winchester Road near the Manor Mollie Mollie the springer spaniel belongs to the Morbin family. Mother's Union Mary Sumner, founder of the Mothers' Union, attended the first meeting of the Chilbolton Branch in the 1880's The Mothers'Union met regularly in Chilbolton for over 100 years. Amy Trotter attended meetings held in the homes of members for many years. The Chilbolton branch ceased to exist in the late 1990's, but some past members still have get-togethers at the Rectory. Mothers and Toddlers The Mothers and Toddlers group was founded in 1979 to promote friendship and companionship for the parents of young children, and a safe and sociable play environment for children under the age of three.
