N.A.F.A.S. The Chilbolton branch of the National Association of Flower Arrangements' Society meets in the Village Hall. New Village Hall In 1962, the old Village Hall, built as a Reading Room for the men of the village, was formally adopted as Chilbolton Village Hall. By the 1980's the Committee, realising the Hall was too small, considered building a new Hall. Early in the 1990's, the Painter family donated a plot of land on Drove Road. On 24.09.1999 a plaque to mark the new Hall opening was unveiled by Mrs. Mary Fagan, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire. Newt These lizard-like amphibians inhabit the ponds and water features of village gardens. They breed mainly from March to July, spending ... Nightingale Local people were familiar with the beautiful song of the nightingale as they walked on the Downs. Now rarely heard or seen, this lovely songbird is no longer a regular visitor. Nuthatch A songbird that feeds on insects, seeds and nuts, the nuthatch visits the gardens of Chilbolton.. They tend to frequent woodland areas and open spaces with old trees. Oakwood, Village Street Oakwood was built in the 1960's in the orchard of Pentons. The 18th century cob wall alongside the house is Grade II listed. Observatory by Day This square showing the Science Research Council Radio and Space Field Station was Jean's first attempt at embroidery. Everyone agreed the result was quite spectacular! Observatory by Night The Science Research Council Radio and Space Field Station, or Chilbolton Observatory as it is known, was opened in 1966 on land that was once part of Chilbolton airfield. Old Barber Shop Ted Smith lived at Daventry Cottage on Village Street until the death of his mother, at which time he sold the cottage and moved into a new bungalow (Winston) in the grounds. Old School House Reverend Richard Durnford was Rector of Chilbolton from 1803 - 1830. He set up a school under the National system. In the 1830's, the school was in the old blacksmith's shop, but in 1843 the flint building near the Church (known as the Men's Club) was opened as a purpose built school for the village. Old Village Hall (1891 to 1999) In 1890, Reverend Pereira launched a fund raising appeal to build a Reading Room for the men and boys of the village. The Durnford family donated a plot of land on Village Street for the project. The building was opened in 1891 and named the "Chilbolton Club House". Orange Butterfly Clare's butterfly is a colourful image of one of the beauties of nature Orchid The wild orchid grows on the Common. The unusual shape and beautiful colours of the flowers are attractive to insects - and humans! Sometimes visitors pick the flowers when they are barely in bloom, unaware that wild flowers should be left to grow in their natural habitat. Over 60's Bus The over 60's group meet every month from March to December for excursions to places of interest, the seaside and shows at the theatre. Members of the group are drawn from Chilbolton, Wherwell and Stockbridge Owl A nocturnal bird of prey, owls are able to locate their offspring at night and bring food back to the nest. A young owl is slow to learn the art of hunting. Owl at Night A bird of prey with a flat face and large eyes, the owl is active at night. They are rarely seen in the village - but often heard! Paperboy's Bicycle Stuart and Philip Morbin were newspaper delivery boys in the village for four years. Paperboy's Satchel Philip and his brother Stuart were newspaper delivery boys for some years. Pattern (Rogers Family) The Roger's family moved away from the village in 1997. The family wanted to make a contribution to the Wall Hanging project, so Margaret designed and embroidered this patterned square to be included in the Triptych. Pentons, Village Street A Grade II listed building, Rosemary Morton's home is a two storey red brick house from the early 19th century with 20th century additions. It has a hipped tiled roof with corbelled brick eaves. Pink Butterfly Laura embroidered a pink butterfly on her square. Laura, aged four, was the youngest person to participate in the project. Pint of Beer Charlie Knight chose a popular leisure activity for his square! Playgroup (4 squares) Playgroup meets at the Village Hall every morning (except Wednesday) in term-time. Children from two years nine months to five years old play together and learn together under supervision from qualified leaders.
