Poplar Dene, Village Street Originally a farmhouse, the owner of Poplar Farm sold parcels of land in the village for development in the Edwardian era. Poplar Dene is situated on Cart Lane, the end wall facing Village Street. Poppy The poppy has deep scarlet flowers and grows particularly on arable fields, wasteland and roadsides. It is a symbol of remembrance for the fallen in two World Wars. Post Box The post box at the top of Drove Road is one of the old style boxes from the reign of King George VI. It is sometimes unavailable for use as birds often build their nests inside! Primroses A wild plant with pale yellow flowers in spring primroses flourish in the hedgerows and grassy areas of the village. Pulpit Pattern A design copied from the carved wooden pulpit in the church of St Mary the Less. Pumpkin Barbara Morbin's pumpkin symbolises Hallowe'en or All Hallows' Eve. Purley Gate A kissing gate from the Common to Mr. Painter's field by the Church, near Purleygig bridge on the Common. Purleygig Bridge Purleygig Bridge crosses the river on the Common where children and dogs can wade in the shallow water. It is a narrow footbridge with metal handrails not far from the Old Inn. Queen's Messenger Queen's Messengers are a corps of retired officers selected from the three military services Rabbit and Flowers Sophie's picture of a rabbit, seen here with flowers. Rabbits Large numbers of rabbits inhabit the Common, the fields and the Downs. Rabbits Sophie's sister Annabel chose to embroider rabbits too. Ragged Robin The ragged robin grows in damp meadows and by the sides of streams. A wild flower with a slender erect stem, the flower head of the ragged robin is made up of mauve-pink tufts. Rainbow Fish Young Ben Critchley designed this colourful picture of a fish and sister Dinah embroidered it for him.. Red Admiral A brightly coloured common butterfly - a frequent visitor to the gardens, Downs and Common of Chilbolton. Right-hand Panel The right-hand embroidery panel, one of a set of three, hanging in the main function room at Chilbolton Village Hall, Eastman's Field, Chilbolton. River and Swans These birds can be seen on the river and water meadows of Chilbolton. Designated a Royal bird for centuries, swans are unusual in that they are all white. Robin This small songbird with a brown back and orange-red breast and face is a regular visitor in the gardens of Chilbolton.. Room Cottages, Village Street Built in 1893, this row of six cottages was originally a part of the Testcombe estate. Architecturally designed by Caroe, they were tied cottages for agricultural workers on the estate. They have been privately owned since the 1920's. Rose The national emblem of England, the rose is a fundamental feature of most gardens. Varying in size, colour and scent, the gardener can choose a rose tree or bush from a wide-ranging selection. This is Mme. Isaac Perriere. Rosehips This berry-like fruit of the rose plant was collected during World War II to make rosehip syrup, a good source of vitamin C for children. Royal Navy Lt. Commander Bezance (retired) embroidered the white ensign of the Royal Navy. There have been Navy personnel in Chilbolton, active and retired, as far back as the First World War. A previous owner of Bannuts served in the Battle of Jutland and Admiral of the FleetSir Varyl Begg lived at Copyhold Cottage.
