Grass Snake

Grass Snake (right-hand panel)
Mike Gee

The grass snake inhabits damp and watery environments. It lives in water meadows, marshes and ditches; and on the banks of rivers and lakes. The grass snake is sometimes found in woodland or farmland, as it lays its eggs under haystacks, compost heaps and in hollow logs. It varies in colour, from grey to brown or black and has an elongated head. The grass snake feeds on frogs, toads and fish and is not a threat to humans.
