Stars and Stripes

Thunderbolt aircraft with the American 'Stars and Stripes' flag (left-hand panel)

Gary’s square shows a Thunderbolt aircraft with the Stars and Stripes – a reminder of the role Chilbolton airfield played in the Second World War. In 1944 the 9th Air Force Division of the U.S. Army Air Force was stationed at Chilbolton. P47 Thunderbolts attacked enemy airfields, bridges and industrial sites both day
and night. As with many wartime airfields, Chilbolton had concrete perimeter tracks and standings, but the grass airfield was frequently waterlogged making take-off and landing difficult.
