The Hawker Hurricane earned a fearsome reputation as a fighter aircraft in World War II. A Hurricane was the first R.A.F. fighter to shoot down an enemy aircraft on the Western Front, and Hurricanes claimed more victories than any other British fighter aircraft during the Battle of Britain, in 1940. Hurricanes, Spitfires and Blenheims took off from Chilbolton to take part in this battle for air supremacy.
