He is now ten years old. Sam's owner, Barry, has in the past trained collies to compete in sheepdog trials and at one time kept a small flock of sheep for training purposes on the land now known as Eastman's Field. Scarlet Tiger Moth Often seen in the local area, the Scarlet Tiger Moth has distinctive scarlet hindwings and black forewings with white and orange spots. Sheaf of Wheat The wheat sheaf represents the harvest, a celebration of crops safely gathered and stored for the winter. Every year the Church holds a Harvest Supper, a tradition dating back to the times when a good crop safeguarded the livelihoods of agricultural workers and sustained a community. Siamese Cat Pat embroidered this picture of her Siamese cat, Jasmine. Pat, a member of the Wall Hanging Committee before she left the village, used to live on Joys Lane. Skylark A resident of the local area, the skylark sings as it soars at a great height. It breeds in open country on the uncultivated Downs and local pastures. Snowdrops The delicate, nodding white flower heads of the snowdrop welcome the spring. Growing wild in woodland, hedgerows and meadows, clumps of snowdrops adorn the village after the winter. Gardeners cultivate the bulbous plants as an early show in the garden - and nowhere is prettier than Stocks Green, lovingly tended by Alan Pratt of The Croft. Solar Eclipse 1999 A spectacular event on August 11th 1999, watched by people all over the world. Spring Cottage Chilbolton Cottage is a 17th century lime-washed thatched cottage on the corner of Village Street and Winchester Street. Once known as Goaters Farm, the farmhouse was originally one property, but it was broken up and sold in the 1970's as three cottages and in the 1980's Spring Cottage was also sold as a separate dwelling. Squirrel Climbing Tree Squirrels are attractive little creatures, often seen in the village scampering between the trees. Squirrel Eating Nut Helen embroidered the squirrel, harvester of nuts. St. Mary the Less The stone-built Norman church dates back to the 12th century, although it was enhanced and renovated in successive centuries. In the early 19th century, the present spire was added when the old bell-tower was pulled down and the three 17th century bells were re-cast. St. Michael's Cottage, Village Street Lesley Boswell home is a Grade II listed, red-brick, thatched cottage with lattice casements. Built in the 17th century it was originally known as Bury Farm. Stag Beetle Rarely seen in the north of the country, the stag beetle has large antler-like mandibles. The male stag beetle may grow to a length of 3 inches (7.5cm.) Stars and Stripes Gary's square shows a Thunderbolt aircraft with the Stars and Stripes - a reminder of the role Chilbolton airfield played in WWII. In 1944 the 9th Air Force Division of the U.S. Army Air Force was stationed at Chilbolton. Chilbolton had concrete perimeter tracks and standings, but the grass airfield was frequently waterlogged making takeoff and landing difficult. Stile Footpaths criss-cross the village over fields, meadows, the Downs and the Common. Stiles safeguard grazing animals and provide access to public rights of way. Stinking Iris A wild flower with deep green leaves and violet flower heads tinged with yellow, the stinking iris flourishes in woodland and hedgerows. The leaves of the plant have an unpleasant smell when bruised or crushed - hence its name. Strawberries This sweet fleshy red fruit is cultivated in gardens and grows wild in the hedgerows. Suzi Chilbolton has a dog-walking fraternity and dogs in the village are often as well known as their owners. Dinah Lindon-Critchley's dog Suzi is a standard wire-haired dachshund. Swallow This small migratory bird with long pointed wings and forked tail returns to the village every year and lays its eggs in nests high above the ground. . Swan The regal swan looks magnificent as it swims on the water, but it has a comical air and a lumbering gait as it takes off and lands. Swan This peaceful and lovely bird will become aggressive when protecting its nest or young. Table Tennis The Table Tennis club meets on Monday evenings in the Village Hall.
